For the most part, that wall dividing the rooms is a support wall and needs to be taken down carefully as it is supporting your roof.

If you do end up going this root, you will end up with a hole in your floor and if you want to keep things constant in the layout you might want to change the floors, preferably something water resistant in the kitchen.
